Cautionary Tale, no. 1, In this world (for solo voice)
is told as if from an imaginary book of tales and fables.
Shifts in texture, text setting, register, rhythmic gesture
and mood are employed to represent three distinct characters
(a narrator, a girl, a threat) in one voice. Our story unfolds
as a young girl sits and ponders the presence of imminent danger.
She questions her self-representation and whether or not she can
ever really escape her role (herself) in this strange situation
(or ever). Thinking up (imagining) a solution, she wills herself
change into a glistening pool of water; cool and refreshing.
Our young girl meets an unexpected end when happens along, a
thirsty witch.
For Sally Norris, Cautionary Tale, no. 1, was an opportunity
to explore implied harmony under a solo line, text setting,
and the nature of musical character by sharing in Sarah's
willingness to experiment with different articulations, effects,
and disjunct melodies.
