Imagining kombucha tea being made in Sarah’s kitchen gives rise to descriptions of various processes. Sarah has developed her own rhythm and phrasing based on the ways she imagines the sounds of the words. In some sections different types of consonants are emphasized, in others sustained vowel sounds predominate. The pitches are determined in part by the acoustics of vocal sound. Tea Story plays with the ambiguity between comprehensible text and the acoustics of the singing voice—perhaps that ambiguity also lies between sense and sound.
